The Scottish Design Exchange (SDX) is a Community Interest Company with two not-for-profit shops in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

SDX supports independent makers, including social enterprises like Glasgow Wood Recycling, by offering them a place to sell their products. SDX currently works with over 150 Scotland-based artists and designers! The two stores are in large well-known shopping centres with massive footfall – therefore it’s a great platform to market ethical, sustainable products to the wider public.

At the Glasgow SDX store in Buchanan Galleries, you can find a number of Glasgow Wood Recycling items dotted around the shop, from the beautiful Assynt Chair and Jura stool (pictured above) to the sturdy Suilven bookcase containing books from local, independent authors.

We’ve even designed and built the cash desk!

Also, our in-house design team has been working on a new range of smaller products, so you can expect to see these at SDX in the near future!

Throughout the SDX shop, fashion designers, artists, textile and jewellery designers, publishers, photographers, product manufacturers, and others work together to share the costs involved in running a busy store.

SDX first set up as a concept store in 2015 to gauge how a collaborative approach would work. It has since proven to be a massive success.

SDX allows emerging and independent makers to sell their products in a retail environment. It also allows the public to invest in locally made, quality products in the knowledge that their money is going to the right place.

There is a huge range of independent Scottish talent from fashion and jewellery designers to woodcraft and furniture makers – and there is new designers and businesses joining all the time.

Therefore, with so much choice, it makes it the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping for unique gifts whilst supporting local independent makers.

Designs on Growth is Glasgow Wood Recycling’s in-house design project. We are funded by the Scottish Government and European Social fund. Our goal is to make 30 well designed, functional products from reclaimed wood. The products are handmade by volunteers in our workshop and are available to purchase.

These products will help us generate more sustainable income allowing us to grow our training and volunteer opportunities and skills development program.
